General Questions

eezy.nrw is an electronic fare (eTarif) that you can use with an app on your smartphone.
The fare consists of a base fare and a per-kilometer charge and is calculated based on the straight-line distance between the starting point and the destination.
-
-
The maximum fare for trips with eezy.nrw in the Rhineland is 27.80 euros* for 24 hours (starting with the first trip) in 2nd class.
In first class, this 24-hour price cap is: +50% of the adult second-class fare
This applies regardless of the number and duration of the trips taken. Trips taken after the maximum price has been reached must still be booked via the app—but they will then be billed at 0 euros each.
There is no maximum price per trip.
The price cap applies separately to each passenger. Additional adults or children who check in receive their own 24-hour price cap.
* As of: June 1, 2026
In addition, eezy.nrw in the Rhineland has a monthly price cap of 63 euros. This means that all trips made via the “VRS eezy.nrw” app within a calendar month will cost a total of no more than 63 euros. Trips taken after reaching the price cap must still be booked via the app—but they will then be billed at 0 euros each.
The 63-euro price cap applies only to trips within North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), because with eezy.nrw in the Rhineland, you’re only allowed to travel within NRW ! Another requirement for the 63-euro price cap is that all trips must be booked using the same eezy app. The price cap is applied separately for each passenger. Any additional adults or children checked in receive their own monthly cap.

It's not always cheaper, but it's never more expensive.
eezy.nrw is generally particularly attractive in the Rhineland for trips to and from the surrounding communities of Aachen, Cologne, or Bonn. But don’t worry: The maximum cost is never higher than the 24-hour price cap of 27.80 euros. And the monthly maximum price is always based on the Deutschlandticket, which is currently 63 euros. - in the Westfalen-Lippe Public Transport Association: eezy Westfalen
Here, too, fares are always based on the distance as the crow flies.

If, within a single trip, the full return ( starting stop = destination stop with intermediate use of public transit) or the partial return (the straight-line distance between the starting point and the transfer stop farthest from the starting point is more than three times the straight-line distance between the starting point and the destination) to the starting point, the trip is split and the fare is calculated as two separate trips as follows:
- A first fare calculation is performed for the straight-line distance from the starting point to the transfer stop farthest from the starting point.
- A second fare calculation is performed for the straight-line distance from this transfer stop to the destination.
- Both fares are billed separately.

Buying Tickets
-
-
To buy a ticket in the app, you need to check in ( swipe from left to right on the screen).
Please check in shortly before your trip begins . At underground stops, please check in while you’re still above ground.
Before checking in, make sure the correct starting stop has been detected. If this is not the case, select the correct starting stop from the list of stops displayed.
Once a successful check-in is displayed on the screen, you are authorized to ride. The app has saved the starting stop using your smartphone’s location data.
You can display your ticket during an inspection by tapping “Show Ticket.”
Once you have completed your trip and exited the vehicle, please check out at the destination stop—preferably at a surface-level stop— by swiping from left to right on the screen.
The app automatically recognizes at which stop the check-out was performed and then calculates the exact fare for the distance traveled. The fare is automatically charged to your registered payment method.
-
-
If you accidentally checked in and don't take a ride, you can check out shortly afterward without being charged a fare.
-
-
It is not possible to purchase a ride pass for eezy.nrw in advance.
-
-
Yes. When traveling with eezy.nrw in the Rhineland, you can select add-ons (adults, children, bicycles) for the entire trip during check-in, provided they are offered through the app. The price cap for these add-ons is calculated separately for each person or bicycle added, and the 24-hour period for the add-on is linked to the 24-hour period of the person who made the add-on. The price cap system for First Class and Second Class applies to each additional person and each additional child.
Depending on the app, a maximum of ten additional adults may be added per trip. Each additional adult, like the primary user, must pay the full standard fare. The number of additional children that can be booked varies by app. The number of additional bicycles booked may not exceed the number of people traveling together. Children under six years of age who wish to bring a bicycle do not need to book an additional bicycle.

-
When transferring between modes of transportation during your trip, you don't need to do anything.
The app records the transfer in the background. You don’t need to check out and check in again at a transfer stop.
-
-
During a ticket inspection, select “Show Ticket” in the app. The ticket will then appear as a barcode on the screen. You must show this to the inspection staff along with your official photo ID.
Check-in must be completed before boarding the vehicle, at the starting stop above ground. The ticket is only valid if it is clearly readable on the device. If your phone runs out of battery, you will not have a valid ticket.

If you plan to use the app on a different smartphone in the future, you should first check whether the new smartphone meets the technical requirements.
Your account is linked to your email address, so logging in on the new smartphone or with the new SIM card is no problem.
If you change your phone number, you must send the new number along with your email address to eezy.vrs(at)kvb.koeln so that it can be updated in your customer profile.
Technology
-
-
To accurately track your trip, the app needs to be able to determine your location as precisely as possible using all the features of your smartphone.
-
-
When logged in, the app receives and sends approximately 1 MB per hour.
-
-
The app uses location tracking while you're traveling.
Battery consumption is measured across various phone models and operating systems. On average, the app uses about 5 percent of the battery per hour, although this varies significantly depending on the phone model and the age of the battery.
Battery consumption is higher when multiple apps or features are used simultaneously. It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that the phone has sufficient battery power during the trip.
If your phone no longer has sufficient battery power, you will not have a valid ticket.
