Frequently asked questions about the Deutschlandticket

The Deutschlandticket is a subscription ticket valid throughout Germany on local and regional public transport. It is valid in second class and entitles you as the holder to any number of journeys on public/regional transport during the specified period.
The Deutschlandticket costs 49 euros per calendar month (from 01.01.2025: 58 euros) and is only available as a subscription via chip card or app, but can be canceled monthly without a minimum term. Cancellation must be made by the 10th calendar day of the month to take effect at the end of the month.

The Deutschlandticket is valid throughout Germany in second class on local and regional transport (bus, TaxiBus, streetcar, S-Bahn, RRX, RB and RE).
The Deutschlandticket is NOT valid on long-distance services (IC, EC, ICE)!
However, there are exceptions in some regions of Germany (but not in the VRS): The respective regional fare applies on some IC/EC lines. Likewise, regional fares already apply on some lines abroad.

The Deutschlandticket is valid from the first day of the calendar month specified in the subscription, e.g. May 1, 2024 from 0 a.m.: Then you have free travel!

You can also purchase the Deutschlandticket as an online ticket in the VRS ticket store.
All other transport companies in the VRS also offer the Deutschlandticket. Simply visit a customer center of your local transport company.

The Deutschlandticket is valid throughout Germany for use on local public transport, regardless of whether it is used as a chip card or via an app.
However, a special feature of the chip card is that the transport companies in the VRS region grant all Deutschlandticket subscribers who use a chip card from the local transport companies special discounts on car sharing and bike sharing services.
For technical reasons, these discounts are not yet available to Deutschlandticket subscribers who have purchased their ticket via app. However, a solution is being worked on.

The Deutschlandticket is a ticket for 2nd class. There is currently no additional ticket valid throughout Germany for use in 1st class.
However, you can use the Deutschlandticket in 1st class for a limited number of regions. There are surcharges for using 1st class on local rail services within the VRS network, which apply in the area of the selected VRS price level.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the NRW-wide additional ticket for 1st class travel can be purchased, see: NRWupgrade1.Klasse.
PLEASE REMEMBER: With an additional ticket that is limited to the VRS area or to NRW, you cannot travel in 1st class throughout Germany!

Yes, the NRW mobility guarantee also applies to the Deutschlandticket, regardless of where the Deutschlandticket was purchased.
However, you can only claim the mobility guarantee for journeys on local public transport in North Rhine-Westphalia, not for journeys outside NRW.

Questions about take-away regulations, transferability and discounts

This depends on the age of your child: children up to the age of 5 travel free of charge and do not need their own ticket.
However, children who are 6 years or older need their own ticket. They also need a Deutschlandticket for use throughout Germany.

The Deutschlandticket does not include a bicycle. However, you can also purchase a VRS-wide bicycle ticket. More information under: VRS bicycle ticket.
In North Rhine-Westphalia there is an additional ticket to the Deutschlandticket, the NRWupgradeFahrrad, which allows you to take your bike with you throughout NRW (not throughout Germany!). More information at: NRWupgradeBike.

Yes, dogs are allowed in the VRS area. Other regions may have different regulations on taking dogs with you. Please enquire in advance depending on your route.

No. The Deutschlandticket is personal and may not be passed on.

The Deutschlandticket social costs 39 euros per month and can be purchased by you if you are entitled to citizen's allowance, basic income support, ongoing assistance with living expenses, standard benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act, war victim welfare benefits or housing benefit. The Deutschlandticket Social has the same validity as the Deutschlandticket.
You can only apply for the Deutschlandticket Sozial if you enclose a copy of your proof of eligibility with your order application. You can obtain order forms from your local transport company here: Order forms Deutschlandticket.
Note on the contract term: If you do not submit a new valid proof of eligibility to the respective contract transport company by the 10th of the month before the expiry date, the subscription contract for the Deutschlandticket sozial ends on the expiration date of the proof of eligibility. The proof of eligibility must have been issued by a service provider based in the VRS network area or a municipality of residence in the VRS network area.

Yes, the Deutschlandticket is also valid for alternative mobility services. In individual cases, however, surcharges may be levied (see Annex 16 AST of the VRS fare regulations), similar to the current system.

No, eezy VRS is only valid within the borders of NRW - it is not a Deutschlandticket with nationwide validity.
eezy VRS includes a price cap of 49 euros (from 01.01.2025: 58 euros) per calendar month. This means that all journeys you make within a calendar month using eezy VRS with the same eezy app will cost a maximum of 49 euros (from 01.01.2025: 58 euros).

Yes, with the "Deutschlandticket Schule" there is also a nationwide offer for pupils. However, the school or school authority itself decides whether and when the "Deutschlandticket Schule" is offered at the respective school. Alternatively, the school authority can also decide to retain the existing VRS-Schülerticket offer.

You can cancel your Deutschlandticket travelcard on a monthly basis (always at the end of a calendar month).
Cancellation can be made at the end of any month and must be received by the issuing transport company by the 10th of the month at the latest.

When purchasing the Deutschlandticket via the VRS app, you can display your travelcard. There you can cancel the subscription using a separate button.
Important: If you cancel by the 10th calendar day of the current month, it will take effect at the end of the month.
