StudentTicket
Unlimited mobility for an entire school year.
Starting August 1, 2026, there will be a new student pass under the Rhineland fare system
The new student ticket is valid throughout Rhineland Tariff area (= Rheinlandnetz). It replaces the previous VRS Student Ticket.
- As before, the new student ticket—valid throughout the Rhineland—is only available if the school district has entered into an agreement with the local transit authority regarding the purchase and distribution of the ticket. It is therefore only available through your school (ask at your school office).
- As a personal ticket, it is valid only in conjunction with a valid student ID or photo ID.
The previous options for bringing additional items (e.g., free bicycle transport) will be discontinued as of August 1, 2026.
For students eligible for free rides , the regulations under the North Rhine-Westphalia Student Transportation Costs Ordinance (SchfkVO) will continue to apply. This means they will still pay a co-payment for the recreational use of the ticket.
Self-paying passengers can purchase the ticket at a flat rate. The self-payer price is divided into two categories (SK 1 and SK 2).
How much does the SchülerTicket cost?
The price of a SchülerTicket depends on the location of your school. There are two location and price categories in the Rheinlandnetz, which you can view here: SchülerTicket Location Categories
If you have a very long commute to the nearest school (elementary school: over 2 km one way; secondary school level I: over 3.5 km; secondary school level II: over 5 km), you may be eligible for free rides and will only pay a small co-payment.
The more children under 18 in a family who are eligible for free rides, the cheaper the ticket becomes. The third and all subsequent children ride for free. Children from families receiving assistance under SGB XII always ride for free. Please check with your city or social services office for more information.
